Memories of Dublins Temple Theatre in the 90s.

In the 10th instalment of our focus on legendary clubs back in the day we take a look at the Temple Theatre.

The Temple opened in 1995 I think it was not sure the exact date , first time I went which would have been around that time it was a mixed bag of tunes , and there wasn't a lot of people there and didn't appear to be a dedicated rave club at that time anyway, so didn't go again for a while.

We got word sometime in the next few months that the place was kicking so we went again and it was great, the bouncers though had a bad attitude at the door something that I was to see a few years later.

I wouldn't have went to the Temple as much as the Ormond, but anytime I did go it was mostly very good, the best ever night I had in the Temple by a long shot was Eurodance 1997 which was broadcast live on 2fm and was a live satellite link up between the Temple Theatre, Fuse in Brussels, Ministry of Sound in London and I think the Sub Club in Glasgow, at that time this was seen as ground breaking and this was one of the first times ever for this to happen, this was the early days of the Internet when most of us hadn't really a clue what the Internet was (better times in my opinion but that's for another day) David Holmes who was a regular in Dublin anyway played an absolutely storming full on Techno set, the club was packed, I spent the whole night on the balcony, I think this was around the time of the first batches of the infamous Mitsubishes and they were mental strong.

Fantastic night, definitely the best ever in the Temple for me, a sweat box and the atmosphere that night was like the early 90's all over again during the golden period of the Rave scene.

Coming back to the bouncers there, they were by far and away the worst bunch of evil cunts I've ever come across in any club, one night I seen them kick the shite out of some lad and take his stash and kick him out covered in blood I was horrified as were others at what I seen so much so we actually left and went elsewhere shocking thing to do it was, another time they found some stuff on someone and instead of just throwing him out held him and handed him over to the garda, no need for it at all, they used to sneer at you in the queue and only fell short of putting their hands where they shouldn't such was the throughness of the search as you were going in I used to be shitting myself in case they found anything on me, it was a pity because asides from that it was a brilliant club no doubts, the actual layout of the club with the balcony and the crypt downstairs was probably the best layout of any club ever in Ireland, but the bouncers were such cunts that put me off going more.

I seen many top DJ's there over the years too many to mention, I must mention though an incredible set from Iconic Jungle DJ the man like LTJ Bukem.

Can't remember the exact date maybe 97/98 the music upstairs was a bit too full on hard house for my liking so went to the Crypt where Bukem was getting on the decks, only a small few there at the start of his set, but fuck me what an incredible set he played, rolling mesmerising beats which just flowed along I stayed in the Crypt all night and by the end of the night it was packed and the atmosphere was amazing, if Euro dance was the best ever night I had there then this was a close second, Bukem was the absolute Don that night incredible set, I'd listen to this all night, I've always loved Drum & Bass from day one and still do especially Bukems style, rave isn't all about repetitive beats, and never has been!

Mauro Picotto and John Cechinni were great nights too, but far too many to mention, quick mention to residents DJ Orbit and Darren Flynn who kept the flag flying for local DJ's and were always very good.

I went less in later years think the last time I went was in 2000, I think due to Irelands archaic licensing laws the club finally closed around 2003 previously it used to stay open until closer on 4am but i believe they were told it would be changed to 2am so they would struggle to get the big numbers they used to get.

Bang-on! A few of our readers jumped on the earlier post with some very limited view points, but here alas is an on point reply by Dave Clarke himself!

A few days back I put a picture up of a cover of DJ Mag with a quote saying “Techno has become too white”

Of course it was the quote of choice of the editor to splash on the front cover, a few of you asked what did I mean by that……

For me, my “techno” journey started with John Foxx, Devo, Vangelis, Jarre, Delia Derbyshire, Tomita, Gustav Holst, to some of you who left some hateful comments on that post this will probably please you as you will know that these most of these artists are white, but those artists would not have existed if it wasn’t for Japanese Synth designers or Swiss Tape Machine designers or the person that designed computers and circuit boards or even electricity, or Edison,….. you can always trace back something to something else, that is how civilisation develops, however how civilisation and artists interpret these things can create a Scene , the scene which I refer to is “Techno” with a capital T.

For a lot of us that grew up on the music of the artists that I mentioned above and of course Kraftwerk (that influence was not direct to me but through producers like Arthur Baker, Juan Atkins etc ) were astounded, but they were separate events….. Techno was a movement that came in the late 80’s (of course Electro is part of this story as well, but was earlier). The majority of this movement was brought to us by incredible Black talent (as was House Music), they were the ones that made the path for us to be inspired and to walk along it. I am not going to name names mainly because their are so many many artists that by lazily naming a few I will do great a disservice to the others, belittling their part in this wonderful music….if you don’t know and you are new to the scene then please enjoy the research.

So that headline “Techno has become too White”. I am not a “Virtue Signaller” , that is a relative new thing that has grown side by side with Social Media and is used by a new generation of social media artists that are steered by managers to capitalise on trends and to be seen as being “on message” , that interview was done October 2003, almost 17 years ago, just as Myspace was starting out….. it was from my heart, not scripted by management. I could see the direction that Techno was going, Minimal was just starting to take hold and re-marketed Techno away from it’s Black origins…… the scene was seen to be purposely moving away from it’s heritage, scenes of course change all the time, they have to…… but as a white artist I could see this white washing happening on purpose.

I bring it up again now as one of our most venerated visionaries who inspired so many artists , who is a gentleman and an intellect puts up on his own FB page messages about Black Lives Matter. On that page are some odious comments from “Fans” I could see almost 20 years ago that fans will not understand how this musical scene developed, but even so these racist comments are shocking. To stop making mistakes we have to understand the history.

That is why by bringing these subjects up fearlessly in public (often by the artists that are racially targetted) we can get change, that is why some online publishers are acknowledging they made mistakes and publicly apologising. This is good. Techno would not have happened the way it did without many black artists, maybe now people that have only been clubbing in the last 10/15 years are completely unaware of this , they are also probably completely unaware how much Gay culture also shaped our music, this is not a time to hide this.

So please educate yourself on the origins of this wonderful music.

I don’t get what skin colour has to do with anything music related. I see in the past how skin colour had identities with in each of their own communities but this day and age? If it’s good it’s good. I couldn’t care if mr blobby wrote it let alone if a artist is black or white. Am I wrong for that or what? 🤷🏻‍♂️ really not got a clue what’s politically correct these days it’s gone so far. One thing is for sure though, the only way racism will disappear is once media stops labelling black and white instead of man or woman.
