A Whole Lotta Roses

The first new music in over 21 years from iconic Manchester band The Stone Roses dropped at 7.50 tonight on BBC Radio One and there was plenty of classic Roses on show. All For One is an anthemic bluesy singalong that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on The Second Coming and has John Squire’s fingerprints all over it from the Paperback Writer style intro to the final solo. If I wanted to be overly critical, the lyrics don’t show the depth that Ian Brown showcased on their classic debut but that’s forgotten when the solo kicks in just after a nice fill from Reni and Squire lets loose in instantly recognizable style. Mani’s baselines keep things moving throughout and the understanding with Reni is still apparent. With a new album supposedly in the pipeline, I’m fascinated to hear what else will be coming up, this sounded more like a teaser that hints there may be better to come before the Summer gigs. Fingers crossed!
