Eclectrika Project: Seven Years of Breaking Boundaries in Dublin’s Underground Scene
October 10, 2024The Eclectrika Project is not just a collective; it’s a unique phenomenon that has set the pulse of Dublin’s underground music scene for over 7 years.
Originally 4 members co-founded by DJ Pierr, Mauro, AKA Dr. Flamer, the Project has carved a niche blending diverse electronic sounds and offering a platform for both emerging and established talent.
What began as an experimental idea with original members Alex Be Tricky and Mick ze German has evolved into a sustained musical movement that continues to thrive, despite changes in the nightlife landscape and unexpected challenges like the pandemic.
Eclectrika’s ability to adapt and remain at the forefront of the local scene where many collectives have faded is a testament to their dedication, integrity, openness, creativity, and unparalleled passion for music!
“Our gigs are not about how many people show up; it’s about bringing the right energy, the right vibe. I remember one gig where it was raining until we took the stage—then the sky cleared. It felt like the universe was on our side.” Dr. Flamer
Mike IUM: “So, lads, I don’t know how many interviews there have been at this stage, but after seven years… Happy Birthday! I mean, Eclectrika has been one of the most consistent forces in the city centre. How did it all begin?”
DJ Pierr: “Eclectrika started seven years ago. It was just a few of us—myself, Mauro, and Alex—trying to create a space where we could play all kinds of electronic music, from house to psytrance. We wanted something eclectic, hence the name. Our first gig was in Turks Head, but we quickly moved to RIRA, in The Globe and that’s where things really took off.”
Dr. Flamer: “RIRA really launched us in 2018, yeah. We got chance of a Sunday residency, and it just grew from there.”
Mike IUM: “What’s remarkable about Eclectrika is how you gave a platform to so many new DJs. I remember you were the only crew in the city letting new talent in. How did that come about?”
“Eclectica isn’t just a promoter group—it’s a collaboration of DJs, a shared passion. We don’t do endless parties; we focus on 4-5 big events a year, and every time we play, it’s like creating magic together.” DJ Pierr
DJ Pierr: “We wanted to create a space for anyone who had the passion and talent, not just big names. That’s why so many DJs in Dublin had their first gigs with us. It’s all about sharing music.”
Mike IUM: “Even when the pandemic hit, you didn’t stop. You adapted with live streaming and brought in different elements, like markets and live bands. How did that shape Eclectrika’s evolution?”
“We’ve never been just about the music; it’s about the community we build with every event. People come for the beats, but they stay because they feel part of something bigger.” Dr. Flamer
Dr. Flamer: “In 2019 we had big opportunity to move our Sunday event to Opium Garden and Opium Venue. The lockdown was tough, it forced us to think outside the box. We did live streams from Opium Garden and even had light bands and mini-markets. It kept us going and brought a different vibe to the scene.”
Mike IUM: “Any standout moments from these seven years? Something that kept you going through the highs and lows?”
DJ Pierr: “There’s one gig that really stands out. It was raining heavily until we got on stage, then suddenly, the sun came out for our whole set. It felt like magic. I still believe it was my mother watching over us.”
“In 2022 we had nice decision to make moving our Eclectrika Sunday at Pygmalion until now. What sets us apart is that we’ve never been afraid to experiment. From underground techno nights to eclectic mixes of house and electronic fusion, we’re always pushing the envelope to keep things fresh and exciting.” Dr. Flamer
Dr. Flamer: “Yes, that was incredible. After we finished, it started raining again. It was like a sign—a moment of pure positive energy.”
Mike IUM: Tell us about the recent 7th birthday party.
Dr. Flamer: “The 7th birthday party was a milestone celebration for us. We really wanted to make it special, and the energy on the night was just incredible.
People from all over came to join the celebration, and it felt like a reunion of old friends and new faces, all vibing together on the dance floor, many thanks to Opium Garden.”
DJ Pierr: “Yeah, we pulled out all the stops for that one. We had some amazing talent on the lineup, including a few surprise guests who just turned the energy up to eleven.
The venue was packed, and every track seemed to hit just right. There’s nothing quite like the buzz you get when the crowd is so connected.”
”I love the underground vibes with our performances at Pawnshop, it always feels like a reunion of old friends and new faces, all vibing together on the dance floor.” Dr.Flamer
Dr. Flamer: “What stood out most to me was the sense of unity. It wasn’t just another party; it was a celebration of what we’ve all built together over the years.
Seeing everyone’s faces light up, knowing we’ve all been on this journey—it was unforgettable. We’re already talking about how to top it for the next one!”
Mike IUM: “And what’s next for Eclectrika? Where do you see the project heading in the future?”
DJ Pierr: “We’re focusing on doing a few high-quality parties each year. We’re not promoters; we’re DJs. So, it’s about bringing the best experience when we do play and continuing to support new talent wherever we can.”
“We’ve hosted a lot of top names, but we’ve also been the launchpad for local talent. Some of the biggest DJs in Dublin had their first gigs with us at Eclectrika. That’s the kind of legacy we want to continue.” DJ Pierr & Dr. Flamer
Eclectrika’s journey is a testament to their unyielding passion for music and their commitment to community. Seven years on, they’re not slowing down, constantly evolving while staying true to their roots.
From underground residencies to headlining big venues and even battling through lockdown, they’ve managed to maintain their distinct identity and influence.
As the collective looks forward to another seven years, their legacy remains firmly rooted in giving a voice to the new and continuing to push the boundaries of Dublin’s electronic music scene.
